LA Experiences Record-Breaking Heat Only Days Following Major Winter Weather.
Following a week of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, Los Angeles is now seeing unseasonably high temperatures for late February.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
On Friday midday, the mercury climbed to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by the National Weather Service. This exceeds the prior high for this date, which was 88Ā°F (31Ā°C) and was established in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were labeled on NWS charts for the region.
Safety Advisories
Forecasters issued a warning that Friday's heat posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for those at risk. Their guidance featured:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Never leaving kids or animals unattended in a car.
A Sharp Reversal
This sudden spike in mercury follows closely after a massive storm system that struck the region recently. That event unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to higher elevations, triggering mudslide risks for millions residents.
Tragically, the conditions also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Forecasters predict a cooldown will arrive. Temperatures were predicted to decrease to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in the city by late Friday.
Additional areas that experienced the 90-degree mark were Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were expected to see the high 80s.
For the weekend, downtown LA can see readings in the eighties, with a further cooldown expected for the following week.
