Cameron Norrie earned the biggest success of his professional journey by coming back from a set down to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win signifies Norrie's first ever success over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Huge. So big for me," stated Norrie, who is now the latest UK male player in history to overcome a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to enjoy my game in the latter part of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the greatest success of my career, my first win over the global number one and likely the most in-form athlete in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's impressive run of nine finals in a row and 17 consecutive premier event victories, which marked the finest stretch of outcomes in the young champion's developing career.

Contest Analysis

Alcaraz seemed to be moving confidently to success at the start as he sailed past the initial stanza. However, the British contender gradually battled back back into the game by delivering with improved accuracy and pulling the Spaniard into prolonged, physical exchanges. His relentless steadiness and consistency gradually took its toll.

During large parts of the battle, the world number one served well but he had difficulty to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The rising talent seemed particularly uncomfortable hitting his forehand, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for much of this season, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 mistakes. Across the net, the British player presented Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, keeping up his steadiness, athleticism and power throughout while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to force himself into the court and strike effectively.

Following struggling for months due to a significant arm issue and difficulties with his game, Norrie dropped as far down as No 91 this year. Following appearances in the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the French Open round of 16 subsequently, this victory further underlines the veteran's improvement as he attempts to return to the top 20 and even higher. The Spanish sensation, despite his incredible accomplishments, is yet to master how to deliver his finest performance indoors.
